2024 Intermediate Bow River School

The Intermediate Bow River School is designed for the Angler that has taken the Beginner School, and is still struggling to put it “all together”. Save yourself years of frustration by taking this full day onstream school. This school will be held on private land on one of the more scenic and productive stretches of the Blue Ribbon Bow River. Two experienced Bow River guides will share their knowledge of dry fly, streamer and nymphing techniques as well as tips and tricks to make your fishing excursions as successful as possible. You will be worked with on an individual basis, recognizing your current skill level, and strengthening any weaknesses you may have.

Topics we will cover include:

Recommended equipment and equipment setup, including dry flies, dropper, streamers, nymphing, strike indicators, double flies and adding weight.

Learn to understand where fish live, and why. Learn their habitat, riffles, runs, pools, tailouts, eddies, current seams, bars, buckets, foam lines and log jams. Learn how to approach each effectively.

Observation - understanding different times of day, different weather, rise forms, seasonal movement, and water levels.

Learn how to break down a river into smaller sections to simplify larger rivers and streams.

Approaching the water and selecting the right fly.

Recommended Gear

Fly rods 9’ long, 5 or 6 weight for nymphs and streamer fishing. Reel needs to balance the rod with a good strong smooth disc drag reel with 50-100 yards of 20# backing. A floating line for the 5wt rod and a type 5 or 6, 10-15’ sink tip for the 6wt would be a perfect all around set up!!

Breathable waders, chest or pant waders to keep you cool and comfortable. Felt soled wading boots are best for the Bow River but stronger waders can wear vibram sole wading boots. If you are wading wet, a pair of quick drying shorts or sun protection pants with neoprene socks and wading boots.

Leaders and Tippets - Nylon leaders and tippets in 2x-5x. Fluoro leaders and tippets in 3x-5x.

Flies will be updated closer to the course date based on conditions. Call the shop for updates.

Please ensure that you have a valid Alberta provincial fishing license which can be purchased through www.albertarelm.com.
